TabVault Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2025-08-08

TabVault is built with a simple philosophy: your browsing data is yours. The extension runs entirely on your device, keeps your data local by default, and never sells or shares your information.

Summary

  • TabVault does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data to the developer or third parties.
  • All saved data (collections of tab titles and URLs, categories, settings) is stored locally in your browser using Chrome Storage.
  • Optional Chrome Sync can be enabled by you to sync your data across your own devices via Google’s infrastructure.
  • The extension only reads your open tabs when you explicitly request it (e.g., “Save all tabs” or “Add to this Collection”).

Data We Access

TabVault may access the following data solely to perform the features you use:

  • Open tabs’ metadata (title, URL, favicon URL) — only when you trigger actions such as Save all tabs or Add to this Collection.
  • Extension settings (theme, preferences) — to provide a better UX.

TabVault does not access page content beyond the tab’s title/URL, and it does not inject content scripts into websites for tracking.

How Your Data Is Processed

  • When you save a collection, TabVault stores the tab title and URL (and favicon URL, if available) in the browser’s storage under the key reserved for the extension.
  • Duplicate links are normalized and deduplicated to reduce clutter.
  • A background service worker updates the extension badge based on whether the active tab’s domain appears in your saved collections. This logic runs locally and does not send any data anywhere.

Where Your Data Is Stored

  • Local (Default): Data is saved in Chrome’s local storage on your device.
  • Optional Sync: If you enable Sync in Settings, TabVault uses Chrome Sync to synchronize your data across devices signed into the same Google account. Chrome Sync is a Google service — your data is transmitted to and stored by Google in accordance with Chrome’s and Google’s policies. You can disable Sync at any time in TabVault settings or in Chrome settings.

Data Retention and Deletion

  • Your data remains until you delete it or uninstall the extension.
  • You can delete individual collections from the UI at any time.
  • Uninstalling the extension removes local storage data associated with TabVault.
  • If you enabled Chrome Sync, you may also clear synced data through Chrome’s own “Clear browsing data” or Sync settings.

Import/Export and Backups

  • Export creates a JSON file on your device; no external transmission occurs.
  • Import reads a JSON file you select and merges or replaces your local data according to the option you choose.

Permissions Rationale

  • “tabs”: Needed to read the title/URL of your currently open tabs when you click “Save all tabs” or similar UI actions.
  • “storage”: Needed to store your collections, categories, and settings locally (and optionally in Chrome Sync if enabled by you).

Children’s Privacy

TabVault is a general‑audience tool and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. All data stays on the device unless Chrome Sync is enabled by the user.

Security

  • Data never leaves your device unless you enable Chrome Sync or export a file.
  • We use Chrome’s extension storage APIs and do not operate external servers.
  • As with any software, no system is perfectly secure. Keep your browser up to date and manage device access appropriately.

Third‑Party Disclosure

  • TabVault does not share data with third parties.
  • When Chrome Sync is enabled, data is transmitted to and stored by Google in accordance with Google/Chrome policies. TabVault does not receive this data.

Your Choices and Controls

  • Use “Save all tabs” and “Add to this Collection” only when you intend to store current tabs.
  • Delete collections individually from the UI.
  • Export/Import data at any time.
  • Enable/Disable Sync in Settings.
  • Uninstall the extension to remove local data.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date and in the extension’s release notes.
